Species Conservation

Protecting the world’s species lies at the heart of WWF’s mission to conserve the Earth’s biodiversity. All the gifts in this part of our shop celebrate the beauty of many species that are in danger. Giving these gifts will help us to sustain our species and habitat conservation work.

We focus on a small number of globally important ‘flagship’ species which in turn inspire conservation efforts for thousands of other lesser-known plants and animals around the world.

The ‘flagship’ species include great apes, African and Indian elephants, giant pandas, tigers, African and Asian rhinos, humpback whales and marine turtles.

According to a report by the United Nations however, a quarter of mammals are currently threatened with extinction.

WWF is taking action to stop illegal wildlife trade, reduce and repair habitat loss, and increase populations of vulnerable species by reconnecting protected areas and forging links between isolated populations.

Thanks to the help of our supporters, we have much to be proud of. For example, the last decade has seen the mountain gorilla population increase from 620 animals in 1989 to 700 today. And black rhino numbers have increased to 425 animals today from a low of 381.
