These pendants are hand carved from tagua nuts, a seed from a type of palm that grows in the South American rainforests. Often known as vegetable ivory, tagua is an environmentally friendly and sustainable alternative to animal ivory. A nut is selected that is as close to the desired finished shape as possible, which is then formed using a variety of sanding processes and polished to achieve a smooth surface.
This ethical jewellery is handmade in Cerro Grande, Ecuador, where Tagua carving supports 90 families, who have formed a co-operative providing much needed income for the local community. On a delicate silver ball chain, these necklaces will make a fantastic gift and contribute towards stopping the loss of these amazing animals.
